For Classic modern and contemporary art you have to pay a visit to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. This museum was established in 1874 and relocated to the Museumplein in 1895. Several international masterpieces are included in the impressive collection of roughly 90.000 objects. The masterpieces of the Museum include paintings by Cézanne, Mondriaan, Van Gogh and Picasso. The red and white chair by Gerrit Rietveld is also included. This is part of the reason why the Stedelijk has such a great reputation and why it is considered to be one of the most influential museums for twenty century art. The Museum can compete with the Centre Pompidou and The Museum of Modern Art.
Currently the Stedelijk Museum often makes the papers for the extensive renovations and refurbishments of the old premises. Long-term projects such as the Digital Stedelijk and Stedelijk in de Stad (Stedelijk goes to town) is intended to ensure that the visitors aren’t entirely devoid from all the great beauty that the museum has to offer. With the heading ‘Stedelijk goes to town’ is an attempt by the museum to get even closer to the visitors. Exhibitions by colleague institutions, such as the Van Gogh Museum, also contribute to this.
The new Stedelijk would initially have been reopened in the autumn of 2010, but circumstances have lead to a delay. Midreth, the contractor, went bankrupt and the construction was temporarily suspended. With the heading “Temporary Stedelijk 2” the museum is temporarily opened until 30 June 2011, with attention for modern and contemporary art and design are central.
