The Van Gogh Museum in the Paulus Potterstraat and the Museumplein is a Museum dedicated to the Netherlands’ most famous painter, Vincent van Gogh. The museums’ collection comprises of amongst others a large part of the paintings that were made by Van Gogh. In addition the Museum houses 500 drawings and 700 letters.
A fact that isn’t known by very many people, and which is also considered very surprising, is that Van Gogh only worked as a painter for 10 years of his life. In this short period he produced parts on the assembly line, which increased considerably in value after his death. Most of the paintings in the museum originate from the periods in which Van Gogh spent in the Netherlands, Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provance and Auvers-sur-Oise. Known works that are located in the museum are The Potato Eaters, Self-portrait, The Yellow House and Sunflowers.
In addition to the numerous Van Gogh items, the Museum also has pieces by artists that were influenced by him or worked together with him. The Van Gogh Museum contains works by amongst others Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso.
The Van Gogh Museum is located in the Museumplein, between the Rijksmusem and the Stedelijk Museum. It’s located at only a few minutes walking distance from Hotel Aalders. If you enter the city from another location, the Museum can also be accessed easily using public transport. Trams and busses stop practically in front of the door.
